Rachel Morrissey loves the way plant forms have the uncanny ability to tell stories and depict emotions through the simplest of gestures. Morrissey paints highly saturated compositions that seduce the viewer, and only after second and third glances do the duplicities of the vegetation emerge. Hidden within the exuberant and joyous scenes, suffocating vines, signs of decay and unwelcome mutations lie in wait. For The Wishing Tree, Morrissey created a new world within the canvas, presenting a fresh cast of animated roots representing the Norton Museum of Art’s signature Banyan Tree. She underscores the parallels between the splendor of the Florida coast, which is continually under threat and at risk, with the tantalizing beauty of her original painting.
