Robert Peterson (b.1981) is a figurative painter living and working in Lawton, Oklahoma. Peterson’s works, often set against minimal backdrops, offer a poignant exploration of the lives of contemporary African Americans. In allowing the intricacies of his subjects' poses, dress, and expressions to be the sole focus, he emphasizes the artistic validity of Black experiences. Peterson paints his figures in illuminated tones of blue and renders the textures of hair, skin, and fabric to such precision that his paintings seem to exude a three-dimensional quality. Peterson has shown his work in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami. He is recognized as the first African American to ever earn the title Artist of the Year in Southwest Oklahoma.
