(2)

These portraits depicting Ferdinand III (1609–1657) and Empress Maria Anna of Austria (1606–1646) follow two portraits by Frans Lucyx held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna,1 with only slight variation in the costume of the sitters.

The MW pewter makers mark probably refers to Master Michael Weinzierl, who on 24 October 1636 became a citizen of Regensburg.2 These initials are also seen with the letter R hallmark underneath, for Regensburg.

1 Both oil on canvas; Emperor Ferdinand III, 77.5 × 66.5 cm., inv. no. 8024; Maria Anna of Spain, wife of Ferdinand III, 150 x 131 cm., inv. no. 3196.
