Description

The Property of a Noble Lady

Follower of Abraham Storck

Naval battle from the Fifth Ottoman-Venetian War, probably off Chania

oil on canvas

unframed: 88.3 x 110.5 cm.; 34¾ x 43½ in.

framed: 109.5 x 132 cm.; 43⅛ x 52 in.

The flags flying at the main mast and transom of the left ship are the Jerusalem flags, whilst the ship to the right carries the Great Turk flag suggesting this is a naval battle from the Fifth Ottoman-Venetian War (1645–69). Due to the size and number of ships this was most likely a smaller battle, possibly one of the four Venetian attacks which took place from 1662.
