Description

Large Fossil Fern Plate

Odontopteris subcrenulata

Late Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian (approx. 323-299 million years ago)

Montceau-les-Mines, France

44½ x 23 x 2 inches (113 x 58.4 x 5.1 cm). 176 pounds (79.8 kg).

Multiple fern fronds belonging to a single species. The careful preparation of these specimens is evident in the fine delineation and high relief. Leaflets and venation are well displayed on these terminal fronds, beautifully preserved on an irregularly-shaped shale slab. The reverse side is covered with a support backing.

Odontopteris ferns thrived throughout the Carboniferous period, and can be found in locations throughout Europe and North America. A large and extremely well-preserved example, this specimen was excavated from Montceau-les-Mines in eastern France, where some of the best examples of ancient ferns can be found.
