Diouf studied at the Dakar School of Fine Arts in the 1960s and exhibited there at the ground-breaking Premier Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres in April 1966. Writing about the difficulty of working as an artist in Senegal he said: “When one is in an artistic milieu in an African country and you are a painter, first off, your family does not understand. The people you want to understand, do not understand. It was not normal in a family. It was something else altogether. After all, what was a painter?” (Joanna Grabski, “New Art and Artists for a New Nation” in G. Salami & M. Blackman Visonà edit. A Companion to Modern African Art, 2013, p. 286).
