The drawing is an invented, retrospective scene, recalling Spencer’s marriage to the artist Hilda Carline. A small girl, clearly representing their elder daughter Shirin (born 1925), can be glimpsed behind her parents’ legs. She was a young child at the time they were living in Burghclere, in the cottage Chapel View (the presumed setting for the drawing), while the artist was painting his murals in the Sandham Memorial Chapel. The Hilda Memorial Scheme was part of his longed-for Church House, planned (but never built) as a successor to the chapel at Burghclere.
