In 590 A.D., Rome suffered a plague. Pope Gregory plead for the assistance of Saint Michael to help fight the epidemic as he celebrated the mass and processed through Rome with prayers and incenses. Later the archangel, Saint Michael, appeared on top of the Castel Sant' Angelo, the fortress near Vatican City, to rid the citizens of the disease.
