Figure of a Magi

oak, the remains of polychrome

height: 28 ½ in.; 72.5 cm.

This oak sculpture depicts a magi, ostensibly journeying to greet the infant Christ. With a monstrance in hand, he wears the clothes of a wealthy pilgrim, with ornate sleeves and a decorated cap slung on his back. The present work was likely created as part of a larger group – perhaps one depicting the Nativity – intended for display on an altar.
