Ange
tilleuil polychrome et doré
Haut 90 cm ; 35 ½ in.
This theatrical figure of a Dachungsengel (roofing angel), which would almost certainly have surmounted an elaborate altarpiece, bears the stylistic hallmarks of the celebrated Zürn family of sculptors, who were active primarily near Lake Constance and in Upper Austria. While the present figure's pose mirrors that of an Angel by Michael Zürn (op. cit. 1998, fig. 126), its deeply carved drapery and facial type, with large eyes, relate more closely to the work of Michael's brother and collaborator, Martin (see op. cit. 1969, figs. 73-74, 79).

____________________________________________
