Still Life with Medlars, a Chip-Wood Box, Butterflies, and a Letter on a Marble Ledge

indistinctly signed or inscribed and dated lower right: [..] de P[urmer] Ao 16[..]

oil on panel

panel: 11 ½ by 8 ¾ in.; 29.2 by 22.2 cm.

framed: 14 ¼ by 11 ⅛ in.; 36.2 by 28.3 cm.

With David Koetser, Zurich;

From whom acquired by the present collector.

This enigmatic seventeenth-century still life is indistinctly signed or inscribed “...de Purmer…”, possibly referencing the so-named polder, or reclaimed lake, in North Holland near Amsterdam. The construction of windmills as part of a land reclamation project in 1618 transformed Purmer into a fertile tract of land, ripe for agricultural development. As such, this painting may serve to commemorate a particularly bountiful harvest season for medlars, the distinctive orange fruit prominently displayed in this composition.
