Description

Jacob Duck

Utrecht circa 1600 - 1667

Interior of a Guardroom with Card Players

oil on panel, a fragment

panel: 17 ⅛ by 15 ⅛ in.; 43.5 by 38.4 cm.

framed: 23 ¼ by 20 ½ in.; 59.0 by 52.1 cm.

Set within the interior of an abandoned Romanesque church, this guardroom scene is an unpublished autograph version by Jacob Duck of a composition in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.1 Originally this fragment formed the left side of a larger unified composition, probably corresponding in whole with the Louvre version, that was at some point cut into three distinct sections. The corresponding rightmost panel from this composition sold in these rooms on January 27, 2023, lot 523. There is at least one other known instance of a Duck guardroom scene having been altered to create two seperate works presented as pendants.2

Inv. no. 1228, oil on panel, 55.5 by 84.5 cm.
