This octagonal panel depicts the biblical scene of the Scourging of Christ (Matthew 27:26). Signed with De Keyser’s monogram and dated 1640 on the base of the column, the present work relates to an oval painting of the same subject by the artist, dated 1637, in the Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht.1 Worthy of note, De Keyser changed professions on May 14, 1640, when he moved on from the painting trade to join the Amsterdam stonemason’s guild.
