Antonio Joli produced this impressive composition circa 1762, soon after his move to Naples. Both the statuary and the architecture that feature in the capriccio are almost identical to those that appear in three paintings by Giovanni Paolo Panini, with whom Joli likely trained in Rome at the outset of his career.1 A horizontal variant of the present composition recently sold at Sotheby's, London, 7 December 2023, lot 66,
1 Arisi 1986, pp. 242-243, cat. nos. 52-54, reproduced.
