Archangel Gabriel

tempera on panel, gold ground, a tondo, in an engaged frame

panel, diameter: 3 ¼ in.; 8.3 cm.

This refined and highly decorative roundel depicting the Archangel Gabriel was executed by an as-yet unidentified painter working in Siena during the mid-fourteenth century. The angel's features are rendered with a miniaturist's precision and recall the work of Luca di Tommè who, along with Ambrogio Lorenzetti, was one of the most celebrated Sienese painters of his generation. The artist used three unique punches to delineate the angel's halo and luxurious gold gown and in the quatrefoil framed elements. Originally part of a larger pictorial ensemble, the present work, almost certainly paired with a depiction of the Madonna Annunciate, would likely have been situated above a pointed arch within a lateral panel's gable.
