The two actors of the kabuki stage walk side by side, identifiable by the large crests (mon) emblazoned on their outer robes. Namakura Shichisaburo II (1703-1774) wears a red kimono decorated with wild mandarin flower crest (tachibana mon) and plovers in flight among waves; his inner robe with stylised wood sorrel leaves (katabami). Sanogawa Ichimatsu (1722–1762) carries a portable lantern (chochin) with a roundel containing tied cotton (kawari yui wata mon), his obi sash displaying his eponymous Ichimatsu moyo chequered design and robe with maru ni do no ji mon [encircled 'do' character crest].
