Reference 6239 marks an important period in Rolex history by being the first Cosmograph model to bear the ‘Daytona’ name. It succeeded reference 6238 and came to market at around 1963-1964. Produced in stainless steel, 14k yellow gold, and 18k yellow gold, reference 6239 was the first chronograph to include a bezel engraved with the tachymeter scale, and subdials crafted in a different color from the main dial. The present lot is an excellent example of the striking color contrast with the beautiful black and champagne colored dial.
It is estimated that only a small fraction of the reference 6239 were cased in 18k yellow gold, as the majority of the series were cased in stainless steel. This present example is one of the rarest variations of the ref 6239 and even rarer still, is accompanied by its original presentation box and Guarantee paper. The Rolex Jubilee bracelet is doubly signed ‘K18.D’A’ by D’Agosto. Manufactured in Argentina under Rolex authorization, the D’Agosto bracelets are exceptionally rare adding to the rarity of this timepiece.
