These chairs are part of a set possibly made for Thomas Gibbons (1757-1826) of Elizabethtown, New Jersey. Four chairs from the set is in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum (acc. nos. 62.3.1, 62.3.2, 62.3.3, and 62.3.4) (see Donald C. Peirce, "New York Furniture at the Brooklyn Museum," Magazine Antiques, vol. 115, no. 5, May 1979, p. 997, pl. IV and Donald C. Peirce and Hope Alswang, American Interiors: New England & The South, (New Universe Books, 1983), p. 46). Two additional chairs from the set sold at Sotheby's, New York, Building America: The Wolf Family Collection, April 21, 2023, sale N11302, lot 885.
