Description

circular, the slightly domed detachable lid engraved with contemporary arms in a rococo cartouche, the base engraved with the contemporary city arms and supporters, with motto ‘Urbs Intacta Manet’ below, molded borders, the interior base and side each marked with maker’s mark WC below a fleur-de-lys, crowned Harp and Hibernia, the lid marked with the same maker’s mark and WC in oval struck twice,

This was one of three gold and one silver-gilt Freedom boxes, lots 138-141, all given to Lionel Cranfield Sackville, Duke of Dorset, as follows: Waterford, by William Currie, Dublin, circa 1752, (the current box); Kilkenny, also by Currie, Dublin, 1753; Trinity College, Dublin by David King, Dublin,1733, all gold, and in silver-gilt, Wexford, also by Currie, circa 1755. At that time the maker was given as “maker’s mark W.C.”
