Dial: later white enamel dial

Caliber: gilded full plate movement with cylinder escapement, the balance cock pierced and engraved with scroll work, fusee and chain, baluster pillars, diamond endstone, gilt-metal dust cap

Case: both inner and outer cases hallmarked London, 1766 and further stamped with casemaker’s mark PM, incuse (Probably Peter Mounier) the outer case further engraved “Captain Amos Warner 1764 to James M Warner1792 to Amos M. Warner 1814 to Jones T. Thyng 1888.

Size: 48 mm diameter

Signed: both inner and outer cases hallmarked London, 1766 and further stamped with casemaker’s mark PM, incuse (Probably Peter Mounier) movement signed Tho. Mudge 636, dust cap signed Tho.Mudge, W. Dutton London

Thomas Mudge, one of England's most celebrated horologists, was apprenticed to George Graham. Following Graham's death in 1751, he began his own establishment in Fleet street. Mudge became free of the Clockmakers Company in 1766, He invented the lever escapement in 1757. He is best known for his skills as a chronometer maker and to that end worked from 1771 on the development of the chronometer.


Thomas Mudge and William Dutton entered into partnership in 1755, although their watches were not jointly signed until 1765. The partnership lasted until 1790.
