The Rolex Submariner reference 16800 was produced from 1979 to 1988, succeeding reference 1680. This new model featured a sapphire crystal instead of the traditional Plexiglas, a new movement (cal. 3035), and an increased depth rating of 300 meters. Additionally, the bezel was redesigned to rotate unidirectionally, making it safer for divers to time their decompression. Initially, the reference 16800 was introduced with a matte dial featuring tritium indexes. In 1984, Rolex updated the model with glossy dials and circled indexes.
The renowned diving company, COMEX (Compagnie d’Expertise Maritime), based in Marseille, France, tasked Rolex with creating diving watches capable of withstanding extreme pressure conditions. This collaboration, spanning from the early 1970s to at least 2007, pushed Rolex to continually improve and develop the ultimate diving watch.
Rolex delivered approximately 300 Submariner reference 16800 watches to COMEX between 1982 and 1986. The present example was manufactured in 1982 and features an early matte dial. The case has a unique back engraved with the internal COMEX reference 6047 and the inside case back bears the full case number, matching the serial number between the lugs. Presented on behalf of a private family, it is preserved in overall very attractive condition and coming with its accessories, including its punched guarantee.
