Rolex is famous for collaborating with special forces to create some limited edition pieces exclusively available to their members.
Through these watches, Rolex recognize the sense of courage and honour of these men risking their lives to protect us.
While the collaboration with some English Special Forces is notorious, the manufacture has also collaborated with a legendary French regiment: the GIGN.
The Groupement d'Invervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale is the elite police tactical unit that is at the forefront for counter-terrorism, hostage rescue or high risk protection missions.
Even if the GIGN is French, they operate anywhere in the world and most of their missions are kept secret. They are recognized as one of the most experienced counter-terrorism units in the world.
The exact number of members of the GIGN is not publicly known but it is believed to not exceed 1,000 in total.
In 2013, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this elite unit, they did a collaboration with Rolex with a special series of the Submariner 116610LN.
More precisely, a first series of 60 pieces were made in 2013/14 and, due to the high demand, a second batch was delivered the following year.
As for some other collaborations, the dial of the watch has not been modified, to protect the anonymity of the wearer. The back of the watch is decorated with the emblem of the GIGN that includes the parachute (for the aiborne troop), the gun sights, the karabiner in a cercle to represent the unity of the group.
Above the emblem, the '40 ans du GIGN' is inscribed as a celebration of the anniversary and, underneath it, there is the personal code of the GIGN member.
This particular example is presented on behalf of its original owner, a member of the GIGN.
It is part of the first batch of these special pieces, making it even more collectible.
The watch has been preserved in most attractive condition and comes with its original accessories, its guarantee card mentioning the Caserne Pasquier (a GIGN base) and even comes with a GIGN badge, making it just the perfect example.
It represents an extremely rare opportunity to acquire the most collectible Rolex connected to the French Special Forces.
