Description

Set with a large tourmaline crystal pendant, with in a staggered textured baton surmount, decorated with brilliant-cut diamonds, suspended from a textured torc necklace, inner circumference approximately 410mm, signed Grima, maker's mark, British assay marks, accompanied by a pouch signed Grima, accompanied by a signed copy of Andrew Grima : The Father of Modern Jewellery, by William Grant and a Grima tote bag.

This necklace formed part of Andrew Grima's 1973 'Sticks and Stones' collection for which Grima travelled to Brazil to find the crystal elements of these designs. The "Sticks" aspect of the collection refers to the linear, twig-like elements that are reminiscent of natural branches or twigs, often crafted in gold with textured finishes as seen in the surmount of this necklace. The "Stones" component incorporates raw or uncut gemstones such as diamonds, tourmalines, aquamarines, and amethysts. Grima chose to use gemstones in their natural, unpolished state rather than the traditional faceted cuts. The pieces combine rough organic textures with luxurious materials which created a striking contrast and marked a departure from more traditional jewellery design at the time. Andrew Grima's collections were formed of unique designs of exceptional quality. He was more than just a jeweller, but an artist whose chosen medium was jewellery.
