Lot Details

Description

Formed of annular links with acanthus leaf and rosette motifs, with gold beadwork, within a ropetwist frame, suspending amphora-shaped pendants, decorated with filigree and granulation, length approximately 375mm, maker's mark interlaced C's.

National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy, Colossal Krater from Altamura, circa 350 BC, the vase has similar foliate motifs to those which decorate the necklace.

In the ancient world, acanthus leaves and rosettes were two prominent decorative motifs, often seen in art, architecture, and ornamentation. Both symbols were imbued with rich symbolic meaning and were deeply rooted in the natural world, representing themes of life, vitality, and divine beauty. While the acanthus leaf and the rosette are distinct motifs, they frequently appeared together or in complementary roles as seen in this necklace.
