Description

[John A. Roosevelt]

Two documents signed ("James Forrestall"), the first dated 13 March 1941 appointing John A. Roosevelt an ensign; the second dated 15 November 1945 issuing a discharge following "active duty in the United States Navy during World War II", Washington DC, 2 pages, 4tos, with envelope.

[with:]

Two United States Navy officer's swords, the first gilt-brass, model 1852, presented and engraved to John A. Roosevelt, sword knot, gilt-metal and leather scabbard; the second nickel plated, hilt and scabbard marked U.S. and engraved with an American eagle with walnut grip which belonged to Roosevelt.

John Roosevelt was persuaded against his initial decision to be a conscientious objector to World War II by his family. Following this, he became an ensign in 1941 and served throughout the War. He won the Bronze Star and was promoted to lieutenant commander.
