A thangka depicting a portrait of Dragpei Tsenchen (1376-1421), Fifth Abbot of Riwoche, Tibet, circa 1550

The present thangka, depicting Dragpei Tsenchen (1376-1421), Fifth Abbot of Riwoche, is the finest preserved extant example from a set commissioned for Riwoche Monastery circa 1550. Others from the set include a portrait of Jigten Wangchuk (1454-1532), Eighth Abbot of Riwoche and a portrait of Kyualwa, Second Abbot of Takyung, sold in these rooms, 22nd March 2018, lots 939 and 940, from the Richard and Magdalena Ernst Collection. Both are illustrated and discussed by Jane Casey, Taklung Painting: A Study in Chronology, Chicago, 2023, cat. nos 94 and 95. Jane Casey also expounds the biography of Dragpei Tsenchen, ibid., p. 1101, recounting how he received full monastic ordination in 1398, and acceded to the abbot’s throne in 1418. He was considered a reincarnation of Sangye On, and had a patron-priest relationship in India, China, Nepal and Tibet.

The painting vividly depicts the Riwoche Abbot wearing layers of gold-patterned red robes and a cap with upturned lappets, with cushions behind within a halo, set against multi-colored stylized mountains, with Tashipel at the center in the upper register flanked by mahasiddhas and Padmasambhava on the far right, with mahasiddhas and Kagyu progenitors in the side registers and five Taklung hierarchs below, the reverse with an inscription in red within a stupa. 

The inscriptions on the reverse read:

na mo rad na gu ru rad na pra dznya bha dra hUm

I

ཉོན་མོངས་པ་ལས་རྒྱལ་ཞིང་།

སྐུ་གསུམ་དབྱེར་མེད་ལྷུན་གྱིས་གྲུབ་ཅིང།

གྲགས་པའི་མཚན་ཅན་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།

རང་གཞན་དོན་གཉིས་འགྲུབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབས་ཏུ་གསོལ། 

Victorious over negative emotions,

who spontaneously accomplished the inseparable Three Buddha Bodies,

I pray to Drakpa Tsechen,

to bless us to achieve the welfare for oneself and others.

II

བསླབ་པ་གསུམ་མཛོད་གྲགས་པའི་བ་དན་ཅན།

རིམ་གཉིས་དབང་གི་རྒྱལ་པོ་ཏོག་གེས་མཚན།

སྐུ་གསུམ་བརྙེས་ཀྱང་ཐ་མལ་ཚུལ་འཛིན་པས།

གྲགས་པའི་མཚན་ཅན་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།

Holding the renowned banner, possessor of the Three Higher Trainings

Master of the empowerment of the Two Stages,

Who attained the Three Buddha Bodies while still appearing in ordinary form,

I pray to Drakpa Tsechen.

III

བཞི་སོགས་ཕས་རྒོལ་དཔུང་བཅོམ་དཔའ་བོ་སྟེ།

དབང་ཕྱུག་ལ་སོགས་དྲུག་ལྡན་མཁྱེན་བརྩེ་ལྡན།

མཚན་དཔེ་རབ་བརྒྱན་ཡོན་ཏན་མཆོག་གིས་སྲས།

ཡབ་སྲས་གཉིས་ཚུལ་གཅིག་སྟོན་པ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ།

The courageous one who subdued the Four Sufferings,

The powerful lord who possessed the Six Excellences, wisdom and compassion,

Adorned with supreme qualities, and the major and minor marks of Buddhahood,

I prostrate to the two branch lineages (Taklung and Riwoche) of the same teaching.

IV

རབ་བརྟན་རི་བོ་དང་འདྲ་མི་གཡོ་བ།                               

མི་དབང་མཛད་པ་མཐར་ཕྱིན་མཚུངས་པ་མེད།

གང་དོན་མཛད་པ་མི་མང་རྣམ་གྲོལ་འདྲེན།

དུས་གསུམ་བདེ་གཤེགས་ཡབ་སྲས་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ།

Very stable like an unshakeable mountain,

whose enlightened stewardship is incomparable,

whose all acts liberates beings,

I prostrate to the father and sons of the Buddha of the three times. 

V

རྣམ་གསུམ་དབང་ཕྱུག་བསམ་མེད་བསམ་མི་ཁྱབ།

ཡོན་ཏན་འཕྲིན་ལས་མཐར་ཕྱིན་བསམ་དང་བྲལ།

ཐེག་གསུམ་སྲིད་བཅས་གཡོ་ཞིང་མཆོག་ལ་འགོད།

འདྲེན་པ་ཆོས་རྗེ་ཡབ་སྲས་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ།

Your lordship over the three different forms is inconceivable.

Your accomplishment of knowledge and activities is immeasurable. 

Even if the three vehicles are weakened, your supreme state is unshaken.

I prostrate to the dharma father and sons who guide us. 

VI

དུས་གསུམ་བདེར་གཤེགས་ངོ་བོ་ཆོས་རྗེའི་མཐུས།

ཕྱི་ནང་སྒྲིབ་པས་གནོད་འཚེ་རབ་ཞི་ནས།

ཕན་ཚུན་བྱམས་པའི་སེམས་ལྡན་བདེ་ཆེན་ཐོབ།

བསམ་གྲུབ་བསྟན་པ་དར་ཞིང་རྒྱས་མཛད་གསོལ།

May the blessings of Buddhas of the three times

pacify all the inner and outer obstacles. 

May universal compassionate mind bring great bliss.

May the teachings of the Buddha flourish as aspired.

VII

འདི་བསོགས་དུས་གསུམ་ཚོགས་བསགས་པས།

ཆོས་དབྱིངས་ཤར་ཕྱོགས་རྡུལ་བྲལ་བདེ་བ་ཅན། 

བློ་གྲོས་དྲི་མེད་རྒྱལ་པོ་བདེ་བ་ཅན།

ཐམས་ཅད་མཁྱེན་པའི་རང་བཞིན་ཡབ་སྲས་ཞབས་དྲུང་དུ།

Accumulating merits throughout the three times,

In the blissful realm of the flawless eastern ultimate sphere,

You are the king of stainless wisdom in pure land. 

I bow to the feet of the omniscient father and the sons. 

VIII

བདག་སོགས་བླ་མེད་བྱང་ཆུབ་མཆོག་ཐོབ་ནས།

མཚན་ཉིད་གཅིག་གྱུར་འབད་མེད་འཕྲིན་ལས་ཀྱིས།

ཇི་སྙེད་གདུལ་བྱ་ཚོགས་རྣམས་མ་ལུས་པ།

བླ་མེད་ཆོས་རྗེའི་གོ་འཕང་འདྲེན་པར་ཤོག།

May I and others obtain supreme enlightenment

with all its defining characteristics. 

May as many disciples as possible, without exception

be guided to the level of a great dharma master.

IX

རྗེ་མཚུངས་མེད་བླ་མ་དམ་པ་གྲགས་པ་མཚན་ཅན་དང་།               

བདག་འབྲེལ་མེད་ཅི་གསུངས་བཀའ་བསྒྲུབ་ཤིང་།                      

རང་སེམས་འཁྲུལ་པ་དག་པ་དང་།                                     

འགྲོ་བ་འདྲེན་པའི་ནུས་པ་ཤོག།                                        

May I, being inseparable from the incomparable and holy master Drakpa Tsechen,

achieve whatever he commands,

and may I have the power to purify the delusions of my own mind

and act as a guide for living beings

X

འཕྲིན་ལས་རྣམ་དག་སྐུ་གསུང་ཐུགས།                   

ཡོན་ཏན་མ་ལུས་རྒྱ་ཆེ་བ།                               

བཞེངས་པ་རྣམས་ལ་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས།                   

རྟེན་མཆོག་ཏུ་གྱུར་པའི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཤོག།                  

Representing pure activities of body, speech and mind,

and with vast and excellent qualities,

bless those who have created such sacred objects,

and may these objects of veneration forever remain auspicious.

XI

བདག་གིས་དགེ་བའི་ལས་རྡུལ་རྣམས་འདི་དག་གིས།                   

ཤར་ཕྱོགས་རྡུལ་བྲལ་ཞིང་ཁམས་དང་[བ་]དེར།                        

འདྲེན་པ་ཆོས་རྗེ་ཡབ་སྲས་ཞབས་དྲུང་དུ།                              

དོན་གཉིས་འཇའ་ལུས་ཆོས་སྐུ་ཐོབ་པར་ཤོག།                          

By the accumulation of these virtuous actions,

may it lead me to the flawless and pure Eastern realm,

I bow at the feet of the Dharma master and sons,

may I obtain the rainbow dharmakaya body for myself and others.

XII

གང་ཞིག་ཞབས་ཟུང་རེག་པས་ཀྱང།                                  

མཆོག་གིས་ཕུན་ཚོགས་བསྐྱེད་བྱེད་པ།                                

རྒྱལ་བ་ཐམས་ཅད་འདུས་པའི་སྐུ།                       

གྲགས་པའི་མཚན་ཅན་གྱིས་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཤོག།                           

Whoever touches his feet

will receive an abundance of blessings.

An embodiment of all the victorious ones,

Auspiciousness to Drakpa Tsechen!

The Three Trainings are: morality, concentration, and wisdom.

The Two Stages of Tantra meditation are: the development stage and the completion stage.
