Composed in vibrant hues that are amplified through their contrast, Treescape in Violet and Green illustrates Wolf Kahn’s exemplary ability to invent intense yet cohesive color palettes. Kahn’s brushwork in Treescape in Violet and Green creates a seemingly endless recession into a dense forest, bursting with rich purples and blues and foregrounded by buzzing emerald pigments.

The screen of trees motif became increasingly popular in Kahn’s later work after the ‘90s, which the present work anticipates. Though Kahn fluctuated between abstraction and realism throughout his career, he remained steadfast in saturating his canvases with mesmerizing pigments. Through his color combinations and expressive brushstrokes, Kahn expresses his love for the natural world and the great inspiration he found in the landscapes around him.
