Wheel-carved cameo decoration, hammered background

Engraved signature ÉMILE GALLÉ Nancy fecit, numbered n° 328 on the underside

The Orchidées rose vase, with its green marbled background imitating moss agate and opaque pink flowers, is similar to the vase decorated with roses in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and the vase decorated with flying mayflies in the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris. Gallé described the specific technique of these rare examples in the note he submitted to the jury at the 1889 Paris World Fair, under the heading “Agates moussues, arborisées”.
