This work is based on a design for a 'Breakfast Table' published in plate 33 of Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director (1754), and a table of this form was supplied by Chippendale to the 5th Earl of Dumfries at Dumfries House, Ayrshire, illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London 1954, Vol.III, p.190 fig.1.
