This exquisite needlework celebrates the construction of the Menai Suspension Bridge. The completion of this structure in 1826 was a ground breaking moment celebrating ingenuity and engineering prowess, it was the first large suspension bridge in the world. Designed by the great engineer Thomas Telford and spanning the Menai Strait, it can be seen for miles and appropriately from Plas Newydd. In her embroidery, 11 year old Mary Anne Hughes captures this extraordinary bridge whilst at the same time depicting motifs that would appeal to a child. Ships and boats sail beneath the bridge, watched by joyful scenes of people and playful dogs along the shoreline.
