Description

the bust on a metal plinth and flanked by two lions, resting on a bronze and simulated marble concave plinth

54.5cm high, 62cm wide, 29.5cm deep;

1ft. 9 ½ in., 2ft. ⅜ in., 11 ⅝ in.

Major Hon Denis Gomer Berry and Lady Pamela Wellesley Berry;

Richard Gomer Berry, 3rd Viscount Kemsley.

This bust is modelled after a notable bust by the portrait sculptor Lawrence Gahagan (1735-1820), commissioned in 1811 for Stratfield Saye, Wellington's country seat in Hampshire. His works included several Kings of England, authors like Lord Byron and politicians like William Pitt. In the important record of contemporary taste and decoration, Ackermann’s Repository of Arts, an image of this bust was printed in July 1818 (see the description in the copy of Ackermann's Repository at the Metropolitan Museum, 42.74.2(6))
