Description

woven in two panels

429 by 158cm. together approx.

The lattice-like composition of this kilim, formed of three bold hooked medallions, was popular among the Aydinli tribal group in west Anatolia. This example includes rows of hexagons dividing the primary hooked medallions, a feature also found on two kilims published in Petsopoulos 1979, pp.120-1, nos.143 and 144, while others are woven with conjoined hooked medallions (ibid., nos.145 and146). Such kilims have long been prized for their graphic quality, evident in the present lot through its spacious drawing and bold contrast between the colours and ivory ground. Related examples include half of a kilim sold at Rippon Boswell, 26 November 2022, lot 145, and a fragmentary example sold at Rippon Boswell, 3 June 2023, lot 166.
