Nguyễn Siên, known formally as Nguyễn Văn Siên, was born in 1916 in the province of Bến Tre, Vietnam. He graduated in 1940 from the Gia Định Practical Arts School (École des Arts Appliqués de Gia Dinh), marking the beginning of his distinguished journey as an artist. That same year, he gained admission to the prestigious École des Beaux Arts de l’Indochine in Hanoi. His academic tenure there was marked by numerous accolades and by 1960 Lê Văn Đệ appointed him as a professor at the Gia Định Practical Arts School. Nguyễn Siên served in this role until 1975, shaping the next generation of Vietnamese artists while continuing his own creative pursuits. His oil painting The Shipyard won the first prize at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Exhibition of 1976.

Nguyễn Siên's oeuvre is deeply intertwined with Vietnamese culture. His paintings vividly capture the rural landscapes of northern Vietnam and the evocative scenes of traditional theatre, encapsulating the very essence and beauty of Vietnam. Nguyễn Siên moved to Denmark with his family in 1986 where he held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Denmark and Norway, consistently exploring themes related to his homeland. Though he lived abroad, Nguyễn Siên maintained a strong connection to Vietnam and returned frequently to seek inspiration and reconnect with his roots.
