Description

Property from The Miller Family Collection

Veracruz Seated Figure

Remojadas, Classic, circa AD 450 - 650

Height: 16 in (40.6 cm)

The Miller Family Collection, Chicago, acquired by 1971 (listed in the November 16, 1971 appraisal of the collection)

Thence by descent to the present owner

The Remojadas style figures are consistently in set postures seated cross-legged or with arms on raised knees. One of the particular differentiating traits are the style of eyes, ranging from the incised eyes, double-wedge type, to the beaded eyes covered in black bitumen, such as the subject figure. Blackened highlights, cicatrice tattoos and the extreme open mouth bearing teeth, distinguish this intense, sensitively composed figure.
