Description

Property from a Private Collection

Nayarit Seated Female Figure

Ixtlán del Rio style, Protoclassic, circa 100 BC - AD 250

Height: 18 ⅝ in (47.2 cm)

Raúl Kamffer

Private Collection, acquired from the above in 1968

This sculpture was the female partner in a 'marriage-couple' pair. She is of youthful proportion and holds the customary bowl in her left hand. Her face has an alert expression with arched brows, rounded cheeks marked by geometric tattoos and parted lips showing teeth.

She wears a densely patterned skirt and chevron-patterned sash across her chest and is proudly adorned with multiple earrings, beaded armbands, a crescentic necklace, and a thick, twisted turban as headdress.
