then by descent to the present owner

In a 1972 letter addressed to Dr Roland Hartmann, Dr Josef Bauer (Orientalisches Seminar des Universität Würzburg) mentions the present nine tablets, dating five to the Third Dynasty of Ur, and most to the reigns of specific sovereigns based on the contents of the inscriptions.

Dr Roland Hartmann (1922-2007) was a noted antiquarian book dealer in St Gallen, Switzerland. He studied philosophy at the University of Zurich and the Sorbonne before turning his hand to the collection of rare books with a concentration on early handwriting and incunabula. His art collection featured predominantly objects from Peru and other Andean cultures.
