Though today it is best known as a brand of blended Canadian whiskey, Gibson’s originated in the 19th century as a Pennsylvania rye. An Irish immigrant named John Gibson founded his distillery along the Monongahela River in 1856, and there it flourished until Prohibition shut it down in the 1920s. Until then it was known for its range of well-aged whiskeys, including this exquisite bottle, believed to have been distilled in 1894 and bottled an astounding 23 years later, in 1917. After the distillery closed, Schenley bought the brand, and eventually moved it north of the border.
Provenance
It is believed this bottle was last publicly sold at Christie's in 2020, as part of an original Macy & Jenkins wooden case.
