The inscription reads: The Merchants Exchange National Bank to William A Thomson as a Testimonial in appreciation of many years devoted attention to the interests of the Bank, and of the high personal regard and esteem of his Associate Directors, New York, June 30th 1869

The First Merchants' Exchange was at 55 Wall Street and burned in 1835. Architect Isaiah Rogers built a replacement in Greek Revival style between 1836 and 1842. The Exchange later failed and the building was left empty until the Government leased it in 1863, and subsequently purchased it to use as the New York Customs House. It was sold in 1907 to National City Bank, when McKim, Meade, and White doubled the size, adding twelve columns to the front and creating a large room under a 60 foot dome. In 2005, it was acquired by Regent Hotels and renamed The Regent Wall Street, the first luxury hotel in the financial district. It was then converted into the Cipriani Club Residences. It was designated a landmark building in 1965.
