Adolphe Itasse was a student of the painter Belloc and the sculptor Jacquot. He debuted at the Salon in 1864, and won a Third Class medal there in 1875. He received a mention honorable at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. As well as creating charming romanticised subjects such as the present work, he worked on important public monuments, including the Paris Opéra and Hôtel de Ville. Entitled Le Jour et la Nuit, the present model was shown in terracotta at the Salon of 1868, and in marble at the 1886 Salon.
