Edward VIII of the United Kingdom (1894-1972)

Albrecht Eugen, Duke of Württemberg (1895-1954)

Edward Prince of Wales (1894-1972), the later King Edward VIII, presented this pair of cufflinks to Albrecht Eugen, Duke of Württemberg (1895-1954) on 14 April 1913 during a visit to Stuttgart.

In 1913, Edward Prince of Wales made two trips through Germany to study the language and visit his German relatives. After a tedious journey on the night train, he arrived in Cologne. In his diary he noted “The Germans are very odd, nearly all the men wear some uniform, they all have moustaches and smoke cigars. I hope this trip will be a success.” The Prince travelled incognito under the name of Earl of Chester. The Prince of Wales travelled via Bonn, Koblenz and Wiesbaden to Darmstadt where he called on Grand Duke Ernst-Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt. From Heidelberg he went to Karlsruhe staying with Grand Duke Friedrich II of Baden and finally onto Stuttgart, where he was received by Wilhelm II King of Württemberg and Queen Charlotte.
