Sotheby’s is proud to present this full social justice themed Houston Rockets uniform worn by Russell Westbrook in the NBA Bubble following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
The back side of the Red Classic Edition ‘1993-1995 Road’ Houston Rockets jersey includes the text ‘BLACK LIVES MATTER’. Many NBA players including Westbrook chose to highlight social justice initiatives on their uniforms in the NBA Bubble in the wake of the widespread George Floyd protests that began in May 2020.
The jersey has been photomatched by The MeiGray Group to the second half of the Houston Rockets 110-102 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on August 4, 2020. Westbrook scored 15 points and added 9 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals in the win. A MeiGray photomatch letter and graphic accompany the jersey.
A certificate of authenticity pertaining to both the jersey and shorts from the Houston Rockets is also included.
Going Deeper | Russell Westbrook
In the 2016-17 NBA season, after averaging 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 10.4 assists per game, Russell Westbrook became the first player since Oscar Robertson in 1962 to average a triple-double. The remarkable accomplishment helped the fiery point guard win league MVP honors.
As it turned out, Westbrook was just getting started.
The UCLA product averaged a triple-double again in 2018, 2019, and 2021. But individual success aside, Westbrook’s teams have consistently made deep runs in the NBA postseason. His lone NBA Finals appearance came as a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2011-12 season.
Recognized for his unparalleled explosiveness and aggression, Westbrook has been one of the NBA’s biggest stars since he debuted in 2008. His career accolades include 9 All-Star appearances, 9 All-NBA selections, and 2 scoring titles. In addition, he was selected as a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team as one of the top 75 players in NBA history.
