SCHUTT, SCHUTT FOOTBALL HELMET
Polycarbonate
Circa 2008
The 2007 New York Giants finished the regular season with a decent 10-6 record, good enough to earn a Wild Card berth in the playoffs. With that said, almost no one felt they were legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
But with former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Michael Strahan leading the charge, the Giants embarked on an improbable playoff run that culminated in one of the most memorable Super Bowls in history. Despite not having won a playoff game since 2000, Strahan and the Giants displayed an incredible amount of grit and rode an underdog mentality to one road victory after the next. When it was all said and done, they were crowned champions.
Sotheby’s is proud to present this New York Giants football helmet worn by Michael Strahan in the 2008 NFC Divisional Round and NFC Championship Game. The Giants defeated the Dallas Cowboys 21-17 in the Divisional Round before triumphing over the Green Bay Packers 23-20 in an overtime victory to seal their spot in Super Bowl XLII. Despite being heavy underdogs on the road in both games, the Giants simply refused to lose. Playing in his final NFL season, Strahan fought tooth and nail to go out on top.
In the Super Bowl, Strahan and the Giants famously beat the previously undefeated New England Patriots to capture the 3rd Super Bowl in franchise history.
The helmet has been photomatched by The MeiGray Group and Resolution Photomatching. MeiGray and Resolution photomatch letters and graphics accompany this lot.
Going Deeper | Michael Strahan
Drafted out of Texas Southern by the New York Giants in the 2nd Round of the 1993 NFL Draft, Michael Strahan developed into one of professional football’s most feared defensive ends. In 15 seasons, Strahan garnered 7 Pro Bowls and earned 4 All-Pro selections.
In 2001, after recording a NFL-record 22.5 sacks, Strahan was named AP Defensive Player of the Year. A two-time NFL sack leader, Strahan recorded 141.5 sacks throughout his career, which is 6th all-time. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2014.
After retiring from the NFL, Strahan has remained in the public spotlight as a media personality and television host. Most notably, he has served as a popular co-host of ABC’s Good Morning America since 2016.
