Circa 2021
By the age of 25, Connor McDavid’s trophy case already includes two Hart Memorial Trophies (MVP) and four Art Ross Trophies as the NHL’s top point scorer. While Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby dominated the NHL for much of the 21st century, it did not take McDavid very long to be considered for the title of best player in the world.
After McDavid’s 3rd professional season, NHL.com columnist Nicholas Cotsonika wrote, “McDavid is so good that he has taken the title of ‘best player in the world’ from Sidney Crosby with little to no argument. Each of the past two seasons, he has led the NHL in scoring and been voted the most outstanding player in the NHL by his peers. Not only is he crazy fast, he makes plays at that speed. The scary part: He's 21 and has room to improve.”
A highly touted prospect, McDavid was drafted 1st overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2015 NHL entry draft. His massive potential was on full display during his rookie season. In just 45 games, he recorded 16 goals and 32 assists and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team.
By the 2021-22 NHL season, most pundits considered McDavid the best player in hockey with a chance to become one of the sport’s all-time greats. Each year he continued to pass significant milestones and add to his growing list of impressive achievements.
Sotheby’s is proud to present this hockey stick used by Connor McDavid to record his 500th career point. McDavid reached the milestone with an assist in a 3-2 Oilers victory over the Winnipeg Jets on February 17, 2021. He finished the game with 2 assists.
It took McDavid 369 games in the NHL to record 500 points. He joined Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin as the only active players to record 500 points before turning 25 years old.
The stick has been photomatched by The MeiGray Group and is accompanied by a photomatch letter and graphic.
Going Deeper | Connor McDavid
A lot of hype surrounded Connor McDavid prior to his rookie season in the NHL. As a teenager, McDavid dominated junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League. In 2014-15, as a member of the Erie Otters, McDavid recorded 120 points, including 44 goals, to capture OHL Player of the Year honors. There was little doubt the 18-year old McDavid was ready for the jump to the NHL.
Despite a fractured clavicle shortening his rookie season, McDavid still showcased his incredible talent in the 45 games he got on the ice. One notable performance was a 5-point outing against the Toronto Maple Leafs on February 11, 2016. McDavid scored 2 goals and added 3 assists in a 5-2 Oilers victory. McDavid ultimately finished 3rd in the voting for the Calder Trophy, the NHL’s top rookie, even though he missed a significant number of games.
Though his incredible talent was evident during his rookie year, McDavid made a significant leap in his second season. He led the NHL in points with 100 and helped the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2006. For his efforts, he received the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player.
In recent years, McDavid’s individual success has continued to coincide with team success. He led the Oilers to three consecutive playoff appearances in 2020-2022 including a Conference Finals appearance in 2022. Still young and in his prime, McDavid is poised to remain the face of the NHL for years to come.
