Ralph M. Chait Galleries, New York
Wolf Family Collection No. 1198 (acquired from the above on May 21, 2003)

Porcelain boxes served a variety of functions, from holding food to cosmetics, ink, and seal paste. The present box is rare for its large size and design. Only one other box of this type, possibly its counterpart, appears to be recorded, from the collection of Avery Brundage and now in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco (accession no. B60P253.a-b). An underglaze-blue and copper-red box and cover of similar proportions with an apocryphal Xuande mark, decorated with dragons in profile within line borders, was sold at Christie's New York, September 21, 2004, lot 260.

For related large Kangxi period boxes, compare a mark and period wucai 'dragon' three-tiered example from the Yidetang Collection sold at Christie's Hong Kong, May 28, 2001, lot 2939, and a blue and white 'Hundred Boys' domed box sold in our London rooms, November 7, 2012, lot 41.
