A Rare Chinese Export 'Orange Fitzhugh' 'Eagle' Oval Sauce Tureen and Cover
Qing Dynasty, Jiaqing Period, circa 1810-20
清嘉慶 約1810-20年 粉彩飛鷹圖字母紋蓋盌
for the American market, each piece painted on either side with an eagle emblazoned with a shield monogrammed BA above the motto E Pluribus Unum
7⅝ in. (19.4 cm) long
Several services are recorded decorated in orange Fitzhugh with eagles with the shields enclosing initials. The initials BA on the present tureen and cover have been suggested to be those of New York merchant Benjamin Aymar (1791-1876), as noted on a label inside the present tureen, and also in Clement E. Conger and Alexandra Collins, Treasures of State, Fine and Decorative Arts in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms of the U.S. Department of State, New York, 1991, pp. 278-9. A portrait of Aymar is in the collection of The New York Historical Society.
