Description

Gibbs Family Brown-Painted Fan-Back Windsor Side Chair

Attributed to Joseph Henzey (1743-1796)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Circa 1790

The underside of seat with early 20th century label inscribed This chair belonged to [...] Gibbs born 5, 2 [...] died 7,28,1842 mar Benjamin Atkinson 10,17,1754, died 29-1 [...] probably belonged to [...] & Phoebe Gibbs"

Height 37¼ in. by Width 18½ in. by Depth 17¼ in.

This chair was originally owned by Benjamin Atkinson (1754-1810) and Ann Gibbs (1756-1842) of Burlington, New Jersey.  Ann's parents were Martin Gibbs (1732-1826) and Phebe Gibson (1734-1781).  While the label states otherwise, given the likely date Henzey would have made the chair, Benjamin and Ann were its first owners.
