The Property of a European Collector

A zukin-nari Saiga bachi [cloth hood-shaped Saiga helmet]

Edo period, 17th century


the iron Saiga-style bowl of zukin-nari [cloth hood-shaped] form hammered with furrowed brow, constructed to the apex with nine iron rivetted plates, the sides hammered with karabana mon [Chinese flower crests], the hammered iron peak with swirling clouds, four-tiered black lacquer itamono-jikoro [solid plate neck guard] with spaced lacing in dark blue braid


The bowl to peak: 26 cm., 10 in.

The shikoro to peak: 31 cm., 12 in.
