A fine and rare kawari kabuto [unusually shaped helmet]

Edo period, early 17th century


the eight-plate black lacquered iron bowl with raised ridges and shakudo so-fukurin [ornamental border] of zukin [cloth cap] form, terminating in a three-stage silver tehen kanamono floret, plain black lacquer mabisashi [peak] and fukigaeshi [turnbacks], three-tiered black lacquer itamono-jikoro [solid plate neck guard] wit spaced lacing in varying shades of pale orange braid, the silvered wood maedate [forecrest] in the form of a hawk in stoop, chased and engraved details


The bowl to peak: 27.4 cm., 10¾ in.

The shikoro to peak: 31 cm., 12¼ in.


Accompanied by a certificate of registration as a Tokubetsu Kicho Shiryo [Especially Important Object], issued by the Nihon Katchu Bugu Kenkyu Hozon Kai [Japanese Armour Preservation Society], dated Heisei 22 (2010).
