I wanted to imitate Gouqu (Cheng Sui), but my sketchy painting in a battered brush turned out to bear greater resemblance to Wang Shuming (Wang Meng). Dai-chien Jushi Yuan.

註:畫上題謂欲學「垢區」,即程邃(1607-1692)也,活躍於明末清初,筆下山水純出渴筆焦墨,然枯而含潤,剛中見柔,沉鬱蒼古,別具韻致,在畫史上開創焦墨山水一門。其筆墨取法元人,參合王蒙縝密一路,大千酷愛黃鶴山樵,早年觀摩其作後得「驚心動目」之震撼,一直致力搜求,勤於臨倣,鑽研透徹,用功至深。本幅以程邃筆意入畫,無疑是循王叔明一脈,取垢區典型之截取式構圖,主體佔據大幅畫面,配合乾枯長皴呈現山石肌理結構,不著烘染,復以刀刻石之頓挫寫焦墨粗苔點。雖「禿筆草草」,卻未拘泥於垢道人筆下遺民情懷所流露之荒寒孤寂,著眼於率意點劃間之暢快淋漓,蒼渾老成,線條寫來勁健而具速度感,足証下筆時豪邁灑脫,恰如畫中歸舟,似放乎中流,行止隨意,一派悠然。題曰「似王叔明」,亦彷彿石谿,可見畫家輕鬆出入諸家,無非多年與古為徒之功,千鎚百鍊下胸中丘壑之自然呈現。按本幅畫風、款識及參照「梅雲堂」所提供資料,本幅約一九六一年寫成。
