Description

finely engraved with paired lions holding a crowned cartouche surrounded by scrolling foliage inhabited by birds, a mask at the base, the spine engraved with Moses and Aaron supporting acollé coats of arms, one side with a later coat of arms (now erased); fitted with a prayer book, 1704, fitted with later brackets at top and bottom, apparently unmarked


Height: 7 1/4 in., 18 cm

The book itself is a Hebrew prayer book and psalter, both with Yiddish translation, accompanied by a collection of tkhines (Yiddish prayers), printed in Amsterdam in 1705 by Moses ben Abraham Mendes Coutinho. The front flyleaf is inscribed: “This prayer book belongs to Mr. Jacob bar Aaron and his wife Mrs. Reichel Saraleh, may she live. Written in Fröschweiler, 17 March 1855.”
